What is Hip Hop?Hip Hop is the term used to describe a culture that includes rapping, breakdancing and grafitti art. Originating in the low socio-economic slums of South Bronx in the 1970’s, it provided the youth of the day an avenue to channel their angst and frustrations. Rap music and dance expressed the political, social and economic conditions from the youth perspective. Over time Hip Hop evolved as a lifestyle with its own language, music, fashion and “kick butt” attitude. The popularity of Hip Hop music and dance has escalated thanks to mainstream movies such as “Save the Last Dance”, Honey , “You Got Served” "Step Up" and "Step Up 2 the streets". The sassy and sexy hybrid dance form commonly referred to simply as Hip Hop has surpassed the jazzercise moves associated with ‘Flashdance’ and ‘Footloose’ of the 80’s. Nowadays, Hip Hop music and its high-energy dance routines are not confined to the Afro-American and Hispanic communities that created them. Mega stars Michael & Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Britney, Xtina and Beyonce have enlisted choreographers who gladly incorporate Hip Hop elements to boost the ratings of both their music, and videos. The increasing popularity of Hip Hop dance classes is partly due to:
Numerous dance schools provide Hip Hop and Funk dance classes so if you are mildly curious, get in there and “shake your booty”. Your body will thank you for it. Hip Hop Dance Student Testimonials"I'd never been to a hip hop dance class in my life and I never knew my butt could move like that until I came to Kaylene's hip hop dance class. She pushes you over the edge by just the right amount, but makes sure you're doing things right. Even in a large group, she succeeds in giving us the individual feedback we need". Vlad Lasky "I've been in the beginner funk class, I find it very comfortable and really suit me as beginner. My problem is my arms and my leg don't cooperate when I dance. I will forget my arms if I focus too much on my legs. However, you are right about having fun in the class not to remember too much how to dance correctly or perfectly." Pera "A big thanks to you for being a great teacher and for making dancing so much fun! Its been great to learn from you and perform with you, if it were any other person teaching me I don't think I would have continued for as long as I have. Thanks again for everything. " Sophia Bruna "I just wanted to say, thank you very much for all the hard work you put into your classes. I know for me when I first attended your class I was very nervous and scared of looking like an idiot. Yours was the very first class I attended. You made it easy for me to become comfortable and to learn to just let go relax and make mistakes so my style would naturally show. You taught me that dancing is more about it being fun rather than it being technically correct. Thank you for being inspirational, supportive, encouraging, wise and just for being you." Tai Toki
